Common Factors happen when you have two numbers for example 16 and 24 which the same(common) factors as each other.
What is a factor ?

A factor is a whole number that divides exactly into another whole number.

Example 1:

In the picture the two numbers being compered are 15 and 24. For 15 the first four factors show that 1*15=15. So 1 and 15 will be factors of 15 and 3*5=15 some 3 and 5 will be factors of 15 as well. You do the same to find the factors of 24. As you see in the picture both 15 and 24 have 3 as a factor therefor 3 is a common factor of 15 and 24.

Example 2:

Factors of 16 are 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16. Factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24. The common factors of 16 and 24 are 1, 2, 4, and 8. The greatest common factor would be 8.
